Book Review of Shadows: It’s Witchcraft! by Jamie Weaver

24845622I found this book while researching secular witchcraft for my newest podcast episode, and I’m so glad I did. This is the least judgmental book on witchcraft I’ve ever read. The author perfectly blends great information, witchcraft ethics, secular and non-secular practice and their own personality and never makes you feel like you’re doing anything wrong. They often point out that there are tons of ways to do things and that this is just their way and is a guide only.

One thing the author really pulls off is the addition of personal stories in a really casual way. Not everyone can insert that into their book and have it come off as dis-ingenuous, but Jamie Weaver absolutely does. I found myself getting really excited at the Harry Potter reference below, and at one point they say “make sure to pee before you get into a circle” and I was, for reasons I can’t even pinpoint, really excited by the word “pee”.

The information in the book is really well researched, and it’s clear this person is a real witch. It’s great for beginners coming from nothing and people like me who’ve been practicing for a long time. There is a good, point form, herb, stone and colour appendix that are great for future reference and the spell section is well organized and just well written. The poetry in her spells is simple, but totally lovely.

The only reason this book got 4 out of 5 crystal balls is because it’s obviously the first book by this author and needs a go through with an editor. I found some spelling and grammatical errors and the text of the book needs to be justified, if only for aesthetic purposes. Fortunately, none of that takes away from the actual content.

I highly recommend checking out the book for yourself.

I bought my copy here and it came to 6.40 CAD and the site accepts paypal.

Once you’ve read it head over to goodreads and give it a review! So far I’m the only one who’s given it a look on there.

I’m hoping to make “Book Review of Shadows” a regular feature here at the blog and rate the witchy fiction/non-fiction books I read on a regular basis and I would love guest reviewers! You can email me at with thoughts on this book, or if you’d like to write a review!
