Though Emoji Spells are practically old news in the Tumblr universe, the recent US Presidential Election brought them out of the shadows and all over twitter. Emoji spells to block Whats-his-face or empower Hillary flooded the internet. In case you haven’t seen one, an emoji spell is a string of emoji that convey an intention for a spell. On tumblr and twitter, you’ll see instructions like “likes charge the spell, reblogs cast it” and a small description of the intent behind the spell. 
Simple! Visual! Colourful! I love it.
It seems silly, but is it really all that different from mysterious and cryptic sigils? (also, show me WHERE it says that magick is never silly. It doesn’t!) You’re still using pictures and characters to convey ideas, ingredients, images, and intent. Though each symbol is pre-created, your string of spell ingredients is unique to you. This is no different from using any language or alphabet to craft a sigil, if you ask me. Emoji might not have the gravitas or timeless style of ancient egyptian hieroglyphics or chinese characters, but they’re definitely recognizable and fairly universal. You don’t even really need a smartphone to use emoji, you just need the internet or a pen to doodle with.
Sigil Magick
Sigil magick is popular because it’s fairly simple and still creative. When creating a sigil from scratch you get to decide everything about what it means and how it looks. The difference with emoji is that you have to look at the entire spell as a sigil, rather than each individual character. You also have to concede some of the design, but for those without any artistic skill this could be a big bonus. Modern usage of the sigil is as a pictorial representation of the will or intent of your spell.The sigil represents the whole of the spell and drawing the sigil out, and then carving it on candles or burning it charges and activates your sigil. Sigils can also function like a visual affirmation when drawn on mirrors, windows, post its, on your leg in sharpie, the tag on your underpants, whatever!
When crafting your own sigil you begin with a statement of intent in a single sentence format, you then remove all of the vowels from your sentence, then all letters that repeat. You’re often left with 2-3 letters that you incorporate into the design of your symbol.
Crafting an Emoji Spell
The emoji spell is a little different, obviously, though there are no concrete rules. You can make your emoji spell however you want! Some go in a linear fashion with a clear beginning and end, but my personal favourite style is the symmetrical one shown above.
To begin your Emoji spell in this style pick a symbol (or two, or five) to be the “open and close” or bookends of your spell. I have a few emoji I use interchangably for these bookends.

🌀 – Great for spells to do with well-being or health
✨ – great for magick about magick, so to speak
🔑 – I think this one’s pretty obvious, y’all
There are hundred of emoji and whatever looks best for you is the one to choose. I’ve seen the knife emoji used like an athame, the flame emoji like a candle being lit, and the “praying hands” emoji and they all made great sense.
Once you have an opener, think of 2 or 3 main components of your spell and craft a statement of intent.
Example:
My online readings are accurate and enlightening.
Your main components of this spell are “READINGS”, “ACCURATE”, and “ENLIGHTENING”.
I’m a tarot reader, so in addition to the crystal ball emoji, I found this card emoji that kind of looks like The Moon card. I decided to specify online so I found this orange icon of a phone with what looks like a heart. A bullseye for accuracy, and what I call the TESTIFY hands for enlightenment. Add in my star bookends since this is a spell about magick and voila:
Once you’ve crafted your spell (I find a notes app is the best place to work them out) it’s time to decide how to cast it. You can put it on tumblr, twitter, or facebook and give the same instruction on likes and reblogs, you can send it in a message or email, text it if it’s a spell for someone else, you can print it and stick it somewhere or burn it in a candle – there’s literally no wrong way. The important part is that your intent is clear to you and properly represented. If you choose to share not only the spell, but the intent publicly this could encourage people to add their own energy into working your magick, and a little extra juice couldn’t hurt.
There’s no limit to the number of emojis you can use. Less can be more, but make sure you’re thorough about including the components of your spell into the overall appearance. I like to use 1 or 2 symbols right in the middle that represent the main theme of the spell, which in this case was psychic readings, but you can also type the word in run of the mill old letters if you like. Specificity is sexy.

New emojis come out across different systems all the time, and you can personalize your spell to fit you perfectly. If you’re casting a love spell take advantage of the various skin tones, actvities, genders, and even religious symbols or icons like a rainbow flag. Personalize your prosperity spell with emoji that represent your industry like food for cooks, musical instruments, cars, tech, even clothes and fashion. Use emoji of different plants to bring in the energy of that herb – like the rose in the above love spell. Animal emoji can be used to represent animal guides or energy! Horses for endurance, rats for resourcefulness, dragons for wisdom and luck.
There’s no limit to the spells you can create with emoji. They’re fun and light-hearted enough to send to friends or out into the world, but powerful when enough online witches use them to work towards a common goal.
