Coloring Book of Shadows – a pun after my own heart!

I heard about this colouring book for the first time when the illustrator emailed me and asked if I’d like my own copy of the book to review and am I ever glad she did that! Since it showed up in the mailbox I find myself grabbing it every time I’ve got a half an hour where I need something to just do without needing to think too much about it. I’ve watched so much less tv!

At first glance I wished the pages were perforated so I could pull out the ones I’d done to affix into my own BOS or frame, but when I actually sat down and read through it and explored the book in-depth I changed my mind. The book is laid out like an actual book of shadows with gorgeous title pages, note pages, correspondences, herbs, moon phases! It’s all there. At the beginning of the book it mentions photocopying pages, which art supplies work best on the paper in the book, and lists ideas of what to write on blank spaces – all of which makes perforated pages unnecessary. Instead, this book is something you can use while you’re practicing or writing spells or planning your sabbat. This is something you can carry around and doodle in or use to carefully create sigils and magick.

That’s not to say that the book only works if you keep it all together and I’ve been daydreaming of fun ways to use photocopies of a bunch of the pages.

• The pages that offer a “close up” image of individual crystal or herb specimens is awesome for learning to recognize magickal items and would actually make an awesome set of colour your own magickal flash cards if you write properties on the back and cut them out.
• The sabbat pages are beautiful and I have this fantasy of photocopying them, colouring it, having everyone that comes to the sabbat sign it or add colour or doodles and the laminating it. (If you do this please show me! )
• The pages for each zodiac sign would make an awesome gift if you either write something about the person in the empty space or add photos and put it in a frame.

Finally, the design. I don’t even know what to say, it’s just gorgeous. GORGEOUS. It’s both modern and retro, doodles and fine art, realistic and whimsical. It’s amazing. If you’re a lot more skilled with your art supplies than I am you can include incredible detail and shading with the minimal lines, but if you just stay in the lines (or don’t, grab some water colours!) you still end up with something that could go in a frame.

This is my first time reviewing a colouring book, but I can confidently say this one deserves 5 crystal balls out of 5. I would especially recommend it to new witches, pagans, or new agers; pagan kids or teens; and ultra creative witchy types. Throw in the Color Your Tarot and some good pencils and it would be an amazing gift.
