On Saturday January 21st thousands of people will gather on Independence Ave in Washington, and around the world in their own cities and online, to show support for those who were targeted during the previous US election cycle. These brave protestors are marching for the rights of women, disabled people, immigrants of all statuses, people of colour, poor people, domestic and sexual violence survivors, and those who object to a government that works hard to hurt and threaten their constituents. The march is fully inclusive and open to ALL PEOPLE who want to fight for the rights of their friends, family, and neighbours.
I fully support the Women’s March, but I am unfortunately unable to attend in person. I have submitted my name and will be participating via the #DisabilityMarch, which allows disabled people and those with illnesses that prevent them from attending to show their support (JOIN HERE), there’s a small support protest happening downtown that I’ll be attending, and a bus of amazing women is leaving from right here in Windsor with bright red pussy hats to join the protest in Washington DC! I am so grateful for those marching tomorrow. So grateful. I can never express my gratitude enough for those of you who aren’t willing to just sit by and let this happen without a fight… and I’m not the only one.
Whether you’re watching the march from home, hitting your own local streets, or going to Washington DC, you’re no doubt going to feel resistance, anger, hatred, and ridicule from those who created the current administration. If you’re at a protest you might be surrounded with love, light, support, and compassion from your fellow protestors, but that’s not to say it won’t be trying. If protesting wasn’t hard, it wouldn’t accomplish anything. If you start to feel overwhelmed or scared, or maybe if you forget why you’re here, here is a guided meditation to help you feel grounded and inspired to fight for change.
The elements make up the whole of the planet, and no matter where you are you can tap into the energy of earth, air, fire, and water.
When you connect to earth you are filling yourself with stable, strong, and supportive energy. When you connect to air you are filling yourself with intelligent, imaginative, and inspirational energy. When you connect to fire you are filling yourself with the flame of passion, creativity, and a desire for change. Finally, when you connect to water you’re filling yourself with magical, healing, and extremely loving energy.
Close your eyes if you can and take a few deep breaths.
Feel the earth solid beneath your feet. Feel it rumble with the hundreds of thousands of feet just like yours that are marching on our planet for justice and change. You’re supported here. The earth has you, and you are safe. Channel the strength of this hallowed ground and beautiful planet and stand – or march – strong.
Breathe deep. Breathe in the same air that protestors all over the country are breathing in. Listen to the voices of love, support, and strength from those fighting for the rights of all beings. Feel the winds of change blow around you and clear the anger and hate away from you and the other protestors. Feel it clear your mind of the hateful noise and breathe a sigh of relief. Feel calm. You’ve got this.
Feel the flame of passion and creativity burning in your heart, in your gut. Feel that flame burning in the hearts of those around you and all over the world. Fire brings destruction, but it also brings growth and change. Feel the warmth of your amazing heart fire spread through you to those everywhere fighting alongside you. Know that they can feel it.
Finally, let a cool rush of love and magic wash over you and leave you clean and clear. Feel the rain on your face, and the sweat on your neck that lets you know you got up and marched for your rights – even if you’re at home sitting still. Feel the blood rushing from your beautiful heart down to your feet, up through your arms, your body, your brain. Hear it rushing past your ears. Reach out if you can and feel the blood rushing from the heart of someone fighting with you. Allow cool water, the source of all life to wash over you both and leave you feeling loved as you’re supported by the earth beneath you, inspired by the voices around you, and driven forward by the fire in your heart.
Breathe deep and come into the present moment. Go forward- whether it’s on your feet, in your mind, or with your heart- knowing you’ve got this, and we’ve all got you.
Good luck.
Please be safe. Be strong. Be tough. You’re doing the right thing.
I love you. I’m thinking of you.
I’ve been pretty desperately coping with political fatigue and was looking for something like this and was surprised it was the only political meditation I could find. I’m going to be doing my own ASMR political meditation on YouTube and may borrow some inspiration from this, but will be sure to attribute because this is fantastic. Really what I needed right now.
