Lilith is and interesting goddess, because she hasn’t always been one. Lilith has been everything from the mother of demons, to a vampire, to a succubus, to a snake to an empowering mother goddess.
The stories of Lilith exist in many cultures, but the best known is the version from Jewish Mythology. Lilith was the first wife of Adam in the Garden of Eden. She was made from the same clay God had used to create Adam and so they were equal as far as Lilith was concerned. She grew tired of Adam’s superiority complex and mansplaining about the rules of paradise and decided to actually have some fun during intercourse for a change. She demanded to be on top during sex, and to be treated as an equal. When Adam freaked out and refused, she grew these gorgeous dragon-like wings and flew away from paradise forever, preferring instead to birth, and kill hundreds of demon babies every day.

She became a baby-eating demon with an insatiable lust, a diet of blood, and the important task of causing and presiding over abortions. As a succubus she assaulted and even murdered men for their sexual deviancy. She’s often considered the first vampire, or even the one who gave birth to the race of vampires that had to feed on blood. One of the more interesting versions of Lilith’s story transforms her into the great serpent in the Garden of Eden, tempting Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. In this way, she’s become a goddess of sisterhood and women’s liberation. She offered Eve a choice, something the men in her life refused, and gave her the chance to take the gift of knowledge for herself.
In short – Lilith is a badass. She’s exactly the type of goddess so many modern people (women especially but everyone can learn something valuable from her story!) need to harness their magic for self-empowerment and activism.
