Hello again witches, and thanks for joining me for another magic rock monday – especially after last week’s hiccup! I’ll be sharing a little bit about working with black moonstone, introducing you to a crystal for the revolution, and even tossing y’all a freebie by discussing the crystal I had PLANNED to work with last week.
Let’s start by looking at Black Moonstone.
Element: earth, water
Astro: scorpio, aquarius
Chakra: third eye, sacral, root
Energy: Magic and mysticism, intuition, dream recall, shadow work, balancing emotions, grounding without breaking connection to higher realms, primordial goddesses and forces, stimulates new beginnings, transformation, success, self-worth and confidence, setting intentions and manifestation, creativity, ancient wisdom, psychic protection, releasing pain, wild inspiration, balancing hormones, protection for pregnant people (and healing from pregnancy loss), blending logic and intuition
I chose black moonstone mainly to use on the night of the new moon to help me in setting an intention (or 2 or 3) that would really help me move forward. I’ve been feeling a little… suspended. Someone on twitter said this whole year is the Hanged Man card and I really felt that. So I carried and carressed my black moonstone all week and the night of the new moon came and…. I slept like a damn baby. Completely passed out. No intention setting no energy raising nothing. I felt so silly the next morning, but then I grabbed my black moonstone and it was like I was suddenly very clear. I posted online asking if anyone had set an intention, and suddenly my own came to me – I need to focus. (D’uh, amirite?) That sounds so so vague, but it’s really important. I feel like everything is out of focus, fuzzy, I have no idea what’s going on or what I’m looking at. Some of that is because we are going through a massive social revolution right now, and that’s producing a shit ton of energy which is overwhelming. Some of that is just me, though. I have felt unable to focus even on things that “spark joy” (as the ACTUAL ANGEL Marie Kondo would say) like reading a book or holding a conversation with a friend. I can get out of my head at all. I have been flitting around like a drunk butterfly doing tiny bits of things at a time and feeling even more lost. because I’m not focusing I’m not absorbing as much information as I want because my mind is somewhere else, I’m not able to focus my spiritual energy even because my mind is like OK IT’S BEEN 3 MINUTES LET’S MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ELSE.
Since then I’ve been reading more for fun, doing less general time-wasting stuff like playing Bubble Witch in bed, and just getting more focused on who and what I want to be in this moment of my life. Not 10 years from now, not even 1 year from now – right now. I’ve been more mindful about what I do and what I say. This is a crystal I probably won’t use every single day, but I think I will make it’s presence a regular thang on the nights of the new moon.
That brings me to the crystal I had intended to work with next – Celestite. This is one of those crystals I am inexplicably drawn to. The large pieces have these caves and valleys between the points and spikes, and I always stick my hands in them in my crystal shop. It’s so calming. I just stick my hand into this celestite geode, and feel the points gently poking every part of my hand from the tips to the palm and it’s like my entire body feels rested. It reminds me of the pokemon centre in the pokemon gameboy games! Ding, ding, dingding, diiing! Your pokemon are fully healed! So naturally I bought a beautiful piece I rarely use at all. The crystal is this sort of, powder blue colour that I find utterly fascinating. Like angelite, but less opaque. I’m not into pastel colours but there is something about a very cool powder blue I find really relaxing. SO ANYWAYS I was so pumped to finally celestite it up and then my piece VANISHED INTO THIN AIR. I have been tearing my apartment apart looking for it all week. Of course, this morning, it fell out of the purse I use literally every day and checked a hundred times! I had already had an epiphany about this week’s crystal and I’m convinced it’s still the right call, so maybe celestite wasn’t what I needed! Or maybe I need to keep better track of my things! So I’ll work with celestite another week, but for those collecting the trading cards, here it is! I also made one for angelite just because. Though they’re not the same mineral at all, these stones are remarkably similar and seem like sister stones to me.
Apparently celestite is great for people with agoraphobia and social anxiety, so if it really has been in my purse all week that really explains why I’ve felt less afraid when I leave the house to shop for essentials or just take a walk. I even took my cat for a walk on a harness and he let strangers pet him! Wild!
So let’s look at this week’s crystal – Galena.
Mineral: Lead sulphide
Energy: Courage, grounding, protection, transformation, baneful magic, self-acceptance, empowering others, past life recall and access, easing fear of death, shadow work, exploring the darkness, mirror work, blocking excess energy from electronics and technology, amplifying the voices and causes of others, revealing hidden treasures, communication, harmony, road opening, strength, karmic justice
I guess I really need black crystals lately? No doubt because everything is so off-balance right now. This piece of Galena in Quartz matrix popped into my head this morning while I was reading minute-by-minute news updates of all the protests and rebellions happening around the whole world right now. THE WHOLE WORLD. People in Germany, New Zealand, Canada, and Brazil (among others!) were protesting the death of a black american man at the hands of police yesterday and I need everyone to stop and realize how outrageous that is. How huge that is. How important all of this is. As a kid I idolized the rock and roll rebellion of the 1960s – the civil rights leaders, the protest songs, and even the riots. The 1967 riot in Detroit, despite happening decades before my parents even met, has been an ever-present reminder of the power of racism and righteous anger of the oppressed. The story of the Detroit riot starts just like any other – the cops raided an unlicensed gin-joint (we loved prohibition here, even after it was not the law) located in the office of the United Community League for Civic Action. They expected a few people, but what they found was 80 people celebrated the return of 2 black GIs from the Vietnam War. The cops arrested everyone and perp-walked them out … where the community was waiting. The community was familiar with the organization on 12th street because Bill Scott, the founder, pushed hard to get local people elected to office and argued with politicians on behalf of the neighbourhood. It became a weekend party place inbetween election seasons where locals could actually relax. The crowd was mixed, but it was mainly black. The detroit police had to wait to load people into paddy wagons and this was their undoing – locals had had ENOUGH. Detroit was a hard place to be black. That sounds crazy to people, but it was. Segregation was such a huge problem that Rosa Parks remarked that it wasn’t much different than Alabama. Black people couldn’t own homes or businesses, and white detroiters where incredibly hostile in keeping black people out of their neighbourhoods. The term “white flight” is in reference to white detroiters actually leaving neighbourhoods because a black family had moved in. This took tax money away from these neighbourhoods, now filled with black people, and left them in a truly awful state. Plus, the detroit police were the copiest cops that ever did cop. All of this rage about constantly being told they were free while they lived under the thumbs of rich whites had built up to such a degree that the riots erupted and last 5 days. The national guard was called in, the cops recieved military support, TANKS WERE ROLLING THROUGH THE STREETS OF DETROIT. More than 7000 black people were arrested and 33 black people died- including a 4 year old girl shot by a national guard sniper while in her own home. The neighbourhoods that burned remained burned and delapidated into my life time. There are still empty, burned out buildings my dad can identify as property damage from 1967. The city, and the mayor who had the whole police force in his pocket, let these people already consumed by rage essentially rot. There was live coverage of the riots on the tv and on Detroit’s favourite form of media – the radio. Windsorites sat on the river bank here and watched detroit burn to the ground. The shouting and smashing glass could literally be heard by Canadians.
That story is not much different than the one that lead to this week’s protests, and ferguson’s protests, and the occupy protests, and all black lives matter protests, and… well you get the point. We humans love to say “those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it” and yet we repeat the hideous crime of racism over and over and the ones most affected tell us and tell us and tell us we’re hurting them and we do not listen until bricks get thrown. The same is true for other groups – the first pride parade was a fucking riot started by black trans women after a raid at a gay club in new york. It’s the same. Cops and the state make it clear the “minority” is not their priority, the people start self-governing and making a place for themselves, and suddenly the state is there with tanks and riot gear. The same is true of Nazis, who were the fucking cops and state in germany when they rounded up all the jews, before slaughtering them.
So what does this have to do with galena? Honestly, probably nothing, but it definitely got me thinking. Galena is a powerful lead-based metal with a dark silver shine. It’s main use was in the creation of crystal radios in the early days of this medium that became a symbol for detroit. Detroit radio is legendary. There is a reason I grew up wanting to be a DJ and it’s because the DJs of windsor and detroit were the absolute kings. Radio was where you heard motown and black music. Radio is where you heard news that wasn’t overtly white or rich, but catered to the lower middle class and anyone else with an ear to listen. In magic, you can use Galena to amplify the voices of this incarnation of the revolution. It can cast protective shields on yourself and others, and help you access the information of the past and past lives. It’s ruled by saturn/capricorn, the king of karma and order. it’s metallic surface shines light on the darkness, both personal and societal. It opens the road for karmic and social justice, as well as opening lines of communication. It’s very grounding and protective, and is said to be great at blocking out the fatigue and stress we get from our connection with electronics and technology. My hope is that it was help me ground and stay strong, and also allow me to contribute to, protect, and amplify the voices of this revolution. Since my galena is in a block of quartz matrix, it’s also got the healing and amplifying power of the master healer.
For those of you looking for magical work you can do to protect protestors, make those in power remember the lessons of the past and face karmic justice, and amplify black voices right now, Galena will be a powerful ally. Friday’s full moon will be a really powerful time to turn the energy of Galena up to 11 so everyone will hear you when you say BLACK LIVES MATTER.
